Named in memory of the first significant planting of Syrah in Martinborough (the historic saleyards block), we now blend a selection of grapes from the Hawke’s Bay and Martinborough to produce this wine. Regardless of source, we always seek to create a typical cool climate, Northern Rhone-style wine, showing a wider range of elegant flavours than wines from a warmer region. Slow, prolonged extraction, and restrained oak treatment, is used to create a balanced wine that can partner a wide range of dishes.
The 2008 vintage exhibits intense dark plum and forest fruit aromatics, with savoury complexities of black coffee, and sweet, smoky wood spice. In the mouth this wine is vibrant and full-bodied with rich, spicy fruit flavours. Complimented by elegant, mouth-watering fruit acidity and tingling spices, this wine demonstrates much grace and finesse on an even, lingering finish.
